Name Dictionary from Around the World
Origin: Spanish
From Galvez + -ton. From Galvez' Town, from Spanish Gálvez. Named after Spanish Vice-Roy of New Spain Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez. The island and bay were renamed Gálvez in 1783 by Spanish navigator José Antonio de Evia, for Bernardo de Gálvez, who supported American Independence. The bay and island were subsequently renamed after the port town that itself took on the name of the island on which it sits.
