Name Dictionary from Around the World
Origin: Greek
From Latin Ararat, from Ancient Greek Ἀραράτ (Ararát), from Biblical Hebrew אֲרָרָט (ʾărārāṭ), in Genesis 8:4. Corresponds to Akkadian 𒆳𒌵 (Urarṭu, “Urartu”), the name of a land which in Classical Antiquity became known as 𐎠𐎼𐎷𐎡𐎴 (a-r-mi-i-n /Armina/) (in Behistun inscription, 6th century BC), Ἀρμενία (Armenía) (in Hecataeus of Miletus, ca. 476 BC). The place names in modern Armenia and the given name are from Armenian Արարատ (Ararat).
